Enjoying a pastime familiar to many Oklahomans, a young woman relaxes by a lake on a sunny summer day. This photograph of Willie Peevyhouse, who settled with her parents and siblings near Okmulgee shortly before statehood, was preserved and cherished by generations of her family, including Eddie Faye Gates. Look closely around the center of the photograph – one of their fingerprints remains visible. Over a century ago, the photographer documented a moment of leisure in Black American life that today reminds us to pause and enjoy nature.
