Americans All!

September 28, 2018 - July 4, 2021

Americans All!, drawn from the Gilcrease Museum permanent collection, showcases the many positive contributions immigrants have made, and continue to make, to American life and culture. Regardless of origin, once in the United States, these newest Americans have consistently contributed indispensable ingredients to the ongoing evolution of America’s cultural identity.

Americans All! includes more than 50 paintings and works of sculpture celebrating over 200 years of American art by 26 immigrant artists. Artists ranging from John James Audubon (Haiti), to Albert Bierstadt (Germany), Leon Gaspard (Russia), Emanuel Leutze (Germany), Thomas Moran (England), Augustus Saint-Gaudens (Ireland), Jules Tavernier (France) and Olaf Wieghorst (Denmark) are just a few of the 26 featured.

For those familiar with the museum’s collections, Americans All! provides an opportunity to consider works through the contextual lens of immigration. Several themes, including American Faces, American Places, American Wildlife, Native Americans, American Cowboys and America’s Manifest Destiny are explored through the eyes of immigrant artists.

For all who visit the exhibition, Americans All! will demonstrate the museum’s commitment to sharing inclusive art and stories about not only our nation’s past, but its present and future as well. In a deliberate effort to make Americans All! resonate with those whose immigrant history and stories may be very different from those of European Americans, an essential element of Americans All! is the inclusion and ongoing rotation of works by first generation immigrant artists, including those of Tulsa-area immigrants.

We invite you to visit Americans All! and consider the important contributions immigrant artists have made, reflect on what it means to be an American, and engage with those many “others” who have made, and continue to make, such valuable contributions to American life.
