Be among the first to experience Indigenous Independence: America at 250 during this exclusive member preview, featuring remarkable objects and documents from the Gilcrease collection. Enjoy refreshments as you explore this powerful exhibition at the Helmerich Center for American Research and witness history firsthand.
As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, this exhibition invites visitors to examine the documents and objects that were “in the room where it happened.” Drawn from the Gilcrease collection, Indigenous Independence: America at 250 considers the American Revolution not simply as a sudden break from Great Britain, but as part of a much longer struggle over land and sovereignty for both American colonists and Native nations.
Walk through the gallery of the Helmerich Center for American Research to study rare treaties between Indigenous nations and Great Britain, peace medals commemorating pivotal diplomatic moments, and historic maps highlighting the Native peoples and places central to this moment.
During this special member event, guests will also have the opportunity to view extraordinary original materials including Gilcrease’s certified copy of the Declaration of Independence signed by Silas Deane and Benjamin Franklin, as well as documents carried by Paul Revere in 1775 and writings by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson concerning the new nation’s diplomatic relationships with Native America.
